This marks the end of D’Argo’s agility career. We had never aimed to earn a C-ATCH or any other Championship. Our goal has been to have fun and see where life took us. And we have done that. D’Argo’s career includes competitions and titles in CPE, NADAC, USDAA, ASCA, AKC, UKC, UKI and AAC. D’Argo has been in two commercials, was spotlighted in Seattle Refined Magazine and appeared on King 5 News. He was a regular at 4-H events where we did demonstrations and he would allow the children to take him through the agility course. Back in March, Ziba was kidnapped by my husband, Joel, after a renewed interest in agility. Being a goal driven person, he wanted a MACH, and he wanted to qualify for the AKC National Invitational. I decided to be the Agility Support Spouse (A.S.S.) in this endeavor, and only ran Ziba when there was no QQ on the line. Joel and Ziba ran wonder-fully together, and they put together fourteen QQ's between mid-March and the end of June, which is also the end of the Invitational qualifying period. Those were enough to complete Ziba's MACH on June 22nd in Monroe. Woo hoo! As for the Invitational, Ziba racked up 925 points during the year, landing her in 6th place among the nation's Welsh Terriers, but only five dogs get The invite. She was just five points behind the number five dog and eleven points behind the number four dog. It was a heart-breaker! There will be no trip to Orlando for Ziba this year, but we'll get 'em next year! Joel and I will be 'sharing' Ziba going forward, and I'm very happy that my husband is enjoying agility! It took a little longer than my competitive nature would have liked, but Junior got his MACH June 1st in Canby Oregon. We started the weekend only needing 10 points. Friday he was clean in Jumpers and got 7 points. On Saturday as we were running the standard course it never occurred to me that Junior would Q and get enough points. It was a super hot day and Junior didn't seem to be running that fast. But he has always been Mr Consistent. After we finished the run I didn't bother to look at the time because I didn't think he got any points. But Teresa Brown kept telling me to go look and he got 10 points. I never thought Sierra would get this because NADAC runs emphasize speed and distance, but eventually, Sierra started gaining speed and then distance, especially distance. People started watching her do the chances (distance) runs because even if the obstacles she needed to go to were over 30 feet away, she listened and went to where she was asked to go. It became a bit of a challenge for her to zip around in the NADAC ring and then go back to AKC and start doing the tight turns and then return to NADAC. Sierra earned her CPE Agility Trial Champion title (C-ATCH) in May 2012 at the RAT CPE trial. At the June 2012 CPE National Event, Sierra earned a Perfect 200 Score award or 9 out of 9 qualifying runs with no faults; only 11 dogs earned this award. She also earned awards for reserve High-In-Trial for 20″ Veteran class and a Second Place for Overall Games class for 20″ Veterans. We didn't know if she would live, much less walk or do agility. Well, she came through the operation with flying colors – but only one year later was diagnosed with a fibrous tumor. While this was not life-threatening, it was growing so fast, if we would have waited to remove it, it may have spread to other areas of her body and become inoperable, limiting her mobility. Luckily, again, she sailed through the operation like a trooper. Unfortunately, Sierra was diagnosed with disseminated histiocytic sarcoma on her 9th birthday in October 2012. Sierra immediately started on chemo and passed away 17 weeks later after putting up a valiant fight. We were blessed to have our little labbie girl. She may not have been the fastest agility dog in the world, but she was right up there with the best of them in trying to please her handler. Since my husband was out of town, I put a “hold”on her and went back the next day with him. We turned her loose in the fenced area with a ball, and Craig went to sit in a chair. Zoe, being the bright girl that she is, ignored the ball (and me) completely, went over to Craig, put her front paws on his lap, leaned her head on his shoulder, and gave him her best ear kisses. And so, of course, home she came. I picked her out because I had always wanted a dog to train, and so we began obedience right away. The HS counselor had said she would be good for agility too, but I didn't know much about it at the time. Zoe is a work-aholic with a great food drive, and a fairly thick skin, and tolerated all my bumbling attempts to learn my part of the agility teamwork. Even so, there were nights I would come home in tears of frustration over learning how to shape and time my commands to keep her on course. We spent a full two years in agility training before her first trial. She is still probably the most graceful jumping dog I have ever seen. At six months Dixie was attacked by a dog in class, causing her fear issues that we’ve battled with. Another attack came when she was two years old, right after finishing her AX and AXJ. She wasn’t hurt, but scared witless, but it took a long time to recover from this one. Dixie’s first agility run was at Bell-Vernon in September, 2001, just about a year after breaking her leg. She was wild and crazy, prompting judge Ken Fairchild to comment, “She has a little bit of an attitude, doesn’t she?”. Dixie is known for her deceptive appearance at the start line. She finished her MACH on August 21, 2004 a couple months after her 4th birthday. I think the MACH II will come a lot faster. Points are not an issue — when she got her 20th Double Q she had about 1,000 points. She’s qualified for AKC Nationals the last two years. Dixie earned Double Qs at both Nationals in 2003 at Long Beach and another one this year in Tampa. Dixie and Jo Ann’s friends and fellow club members are very proud of this dynamic duo for placing 3rd out of 202 dogs in the 12-inch class at the 2005 AKC Nationals and earning a Bronze Medal!!
